Community Land Trusts (CLTs) are actively developing attainably priced housing in Ohio. Nonprofit organizations that acquire and hold land for the collective benefit of the community, CLTs owns the land and can develop it into housing. The homeowner owns the building on the land but leases the land itself from the CLT through a renewable long-term lease (usually 99 years). Residents can resell, though there are limits on who can purchase the home and at what cost. This model helps to keep housing costs low for residents permanently.
Ohio Community Land Trust Network is a convening organization for community land trusts throughout the state. The Network supports the efforts of its members through public education, technical assistance, training, peer networking, and organizational development assistance. Current members include Central Ohio Community Land Trust, Near West Land Trust, Oberlin Community Land Trust, and Yellow Springs Home, Inc.
GOPC recently partnered with the Ohio CLT Network to create a website for the organization. You can now visit www.ohiocltnetwork.org to learn about what the Network does, who its members are, and read about projects that members have undertaken in Ohio communities. You can also find information on how to become a member, whether you are a community land trust or an organization that supports the same goals.
