Today’s #GOPCThread takes a look at our recently updated public policy platform, as well as important questions for candidates at the state and federal level ahead of #Election2020
2020 has been a period of unprecedented challenges for Ohio and the nation. Each month has seemingly presented a new crisis. We teeter on the edge of a recession, and our small businesses and residents are likely to absorb the brunt of the pandemic’s economic fallout. #GOPCThread
But out of those challenges are opportunities—opportunities for reform and growth to build a Greater Ohio. GOPC’s mission “to improve the communities of Ohio through smart growth strategies and research,” is more important than ever. #GOCPThread
GOPC’s 2020-2021 public policy agenda is based on objective data, not politics. It builds upon what exists, sees what could be, and creates solutions to enable sustainable growth; encourages pride in place; and fosters collaboration by #BuildingAGreaterOH #GOPCThread
#BuildingAGreaterOH includes investing in #Brownfields. Ohio once was a leader in redeveloping these blighted industrial and commercial properties that are found in every county and community, but we have fallen behind our peer states #GOPCThread
#BuildingAGreaterOH means funding the #CleanOhio program. Dedicating the revenue Ohio receives in liquor profits each year would provide over $40M per year in funding that is flexible, sustainable, & complementary to existing remediation programs
The coronavirus pandemic has illustrated the importance of a diversified transportation network to move people, goods, and services. It has also exposed a major challenge that puts us at a competitive disadvantage—uneven broadband access across the state #GOPCThread
The serious deficiencies in access to broadband & high-speed internet in both rural Ohio & marginalized neighborhoods in our urban areas has growth during the pandemic. #BuildingAGreaterOH will require a commitment to ensuring all Ohioans have access to broadband #GOPCThread
#Ohio needs innovative strategies & funding to provide for modern infrastructure. #BuildingAGreaterOH will need to prioritize “taking care of what we have” for existing infrastructure & maintain a strong commitment to public transit w/ both GRF and FHWA flex-funding #GOPCThread
Investing in modern infrastructure also means embracing #ActiveTransportation and making strategic investments to promote complete streets policies, promoting walking, running, and cycling outdoors in safe environments #BuildingAGreaterOH
Assisting communities’ transition for new economic realities must be a partnership between local and state leaders. Legacy communities in Ohio were the engines of our country’s prosperity for decades. That is why #BuildingAGreaterOH requires empowering Ohio’ #LegacyCities
Keys to empowering Ohio’s #LegacyCities include protecting families through housing, stabilizing our downtowns & commercial centers, preventing blight & disinvestment in neighborhoods and investing in communities #BuildingAGreaterOH #GOPCThread
#BuildingAGreaterOH also means preserving long-term city investments. Now is not the time to change how income taxes are collected in Ohio. Doing no not only threatens city budgets, but it would create an administrative nightmare for all businesses
We must also ensure #CapacityBuilding is part of all state programs. #Ohio needs to assist legacy cities become vibrant, prosperous and connected places—helping them obtain, improve, and retain the skills, knowledge, and tools needed to do their jobs competently #GOPCThread
We truly are living through an unprecedented time. Responding to this crisis requires leadership at all levels – federal, state and local. That is why is important as we head into the election season that policymakers at all levels be well informed #BuildingAGreaterOH #GOPCThread
That is why @GreaterOhio has created a series of questions that we believe candidates should have answers for going into the 2020 election. These questions address the preceding issues of #Brownfields, #Infrastructure & #LegacyCities #BuildingAGreaterOH #GOPCThread
Examples include on #Brownfields: What will state and local policymakers need to do to ensure that more programs support quality of life revitalization, not just economic revitalization? #BuildingAGreaterOH #GOPCThread
#LegacyCities: How will you ensure that communities, small & large, have the ability to attract talent & business, particularly as work-from-policies increase the possibility that employees will chose where to live based on amenities & quality of life factors? #GOPCThread
These questions and others are available on our website, where you will also find a downloadable pdf #BuildingAGreaterOH #GOPCThread
There are 40 days between now and election day. If you are a voter who cares about #BuildingAGreaterOH, make sure you are talking to candidates about these issues; and if you are a candidate, be sure you can answer these questions #GOPCThread
