The Creating Healthy Communities Program: An Active Transportation Project Development Tool for Ohio Communities
The Greater Ohio Policy Center (GOPC) has been advocating for greater investment in Active Transportation for the past several years. This work has involved growing the availability of resources at the state level, as well as working with local communities to raise awareness about the availability of resources at the federal, state, and philanthropic levels. We have also worked to educate communities throughout Ohio by highlighting well-developed active transportation projects and initiatives throughout the state.
The Creating Healthy Communities Program (CHC) is one such program communities can consider applying to that supports investment in active transportation initiatives and infrastructure development. Operated by the Ohio Department of Health through a federal grant, CHC supports programs that are intended to increase opportunities for physical activity and improve access to and affordability of healthy foods.
While the CHC program is currently closed to applications (a new five-year grant cycle commences on October 1, 2024), we are sharing this information now so communities can consider applying to the program in the future by preparing a strong application and assembling the right local community coalition to hit the ground running when the next program availability goes live sometime in late 2028 or early 2029.
While reviewing the CHC program, be sure to check-out the other AT resources that are available to communities across Ohio here on our website. This includes our recently published guides
